Gas saving tips

With today's rising gas prices, it is becoming increasingly important for us as responsible consumers to limit our oil dependence so as to minimize our carbon footprints. There are a number of ways in which we can do this, and I have compiled a list of some of the most common ways to conserve fuel. In no particular order, here's a list of ways to save gas:

1 Attempt to purchase a vehicle with better gas mileage. Of course this will only work if you're in the market for a new car, but always keep in mind the gas mileage of the vehicle before you jump right in and purchase a Chevrolet Expedition, Lincoln Navigator or Nissan Titan, take a look at a hybrid SUV or similar pick-up that gets better mileage. Hybrid or alternative fuel vehicles are becoming more and more popular and affordable.

2 Try to carpool when appropriate. Remember the days when there were less cars per people of driving age in a house? Unfortunately, that trend is changing and although owning several cars doesn't increase gas consumption, having one person drive one car all the time increases fuel consumption. Instead, try having two or more people in the car when going to an event. Better yet, call co-workers or friends and see if they're attending the same event or driving in the same direction and see if they'd like to hop in your car with you. It will save you both money as you'll split the gas costs, and it saves gas!

3 Drive conservatively. This means, don't hit the acceleration pedal hard when picking up speed. Likewise, don't hit the break pedal extra hard. Obviously you'll need to slow down if the car in front of you is slowing, but don't jump right to hitting the brakes hard when you have 100 feet of space in front of you and the car in front isn't braking. Think of it this way- when you brake, you'll have to make up that loss of speed by pushing down on the gas pedal again. Less braking (when appropriate) = less gas usage!

These are just some suggestions for using less gas. I have included several links for your reference and for further study, if you're interested. Whether you're motivated by financial or emotional reasons, decreasing our gas consumption is a worthy cause worth looking at.
