How to be a safe motorcyclist
Motorcycling is a very fast growing trend in driving these days. Motorcycle sales are through the roof and more drivers are turning to driving a motorcycle for various reasons. And there are good reasons to be a motorcyclist- they get great gas mileage, they're fun, there's nothing like seeing the world from the view of a motorcycle and they can be a great past-time (if used safely). If you are considering purchasing and/or driving a motorcycle, there are a number of things that you can do to decrease your chance of being in a serious accident. Motorcycle deaths lead to more deaths than car accidents, so it is especially important to be safe when driving! For practical defensive-driving advice, visit my previously written intel, found here. But, if you're looking for good tips to being a safe motorcyclist, then read on! - Be visible! Choose safety equipment that is easily seen on the roads. The reason other vehicles hit motorcyclists is that they claim to not have seen them. Wear bright, reflective vests, helmets, boots, pants, etc. Also, although most motorcycles automatically keep the headlight on when the engine is on, be sure that your headlight is bright enough for people to see you. - Perform a safety check before you drive on the road. No matter how new your bike might be, don't just jump on it and drive off. Check the lights, brakes, handlebar, tire pressure, seat, windshield, etc. It's better to spend a few minutes doing this safety check rather than coming across an unpleasant surprise while driving 60 mph on the road with other cars around you! - Don't drive like a maniac! Most people, when the feel the power of the motorcycle between their legs, twist the throttle and get up to 100 mph, weaving in and out of traffic, etc. Although in some states "lane splitting" in a motorcycle is legal, in MOST states it is not and for good reasons too! It's dangerous! Simply because your motorcycle can squeeze in between two cars and fly past everyone doesn't mean that you should do it! This might be one of the most basic things for people, but be sure to follow the laws when driving! In addition to that, though, don't drive in a reckless manner, or you'll end up finding yourself in a wreck! - Attend a driver's education school specifically for motorcycles. There are a ton of them out there and they can be pretty inexpensive. They are invaluable when it comes to learning how to drive a motorcycle safely! Often times, they make the process of getting a motorcycle license easier, too! For added motorcycle safety tips, visit the links below. |
