How to drive defensively

If you're living in a similar location to mine, I bet you'd agree that drivers on the roads today could be better. It seems as if drivers these days are getting worse and worse! Driving on the roads today is becoming increasingly dangerous, so here is a list of tips for you to become more of a defensive driver:

1. Give yourself enough reacting time to cars around you. Sometimes called a "buffer zone," make sure that when you're driving you are leaving enough time for you to react to a braking car in front of you, an animal running in front of your car or a car beside you lane changing into your lane.

2. Always give yourself an out. When you're driving, always think of the "what if." What would I do if that car in front of me slammed on their brakes as hard as they could? What would happen if that car behind me began tailgating me? What if that dog on the leash got loose and ran in front of my car? What if that teenager decided to throw something at my car? How would I react? Keep thinking of what you'd do in these situations and give yourself an out. If that person does slam on their brakes, you could swerve into the shoulder. If that animal runs in front of your car you could slam on your breaks and hit your horn.

3. Use your horn. Don't use it in an aggressive manner, but it's one of the best ways to get the attention of a vehicle who might not otherwise see you. Also, using your horn is the best way to move incoming animals. So many people think that flashing your lights at deer in the road gets them to move- it doesn't. All it does is blind them! Honking your horn will scare them away.

4. TURN OF YOUR CELL PHONE! Probably one of the worst ideas since paying exorbitant amounts for bottled water is the idea that you should (and have the right to) always be on the cell phone while driving. Whether or not you realize it, this distracts you from your primary focus: driving safely. It decreases your speed, lowers your awareness and often gets other drivers around you mad at you for those exact reasons! Studies have shown that hands free devices produce the exact results- distraction from the road and slowed driving.

5. Leave your headlights on. Newer cars automatically turn your headlights on in the car once it starts. This will increase your visibility on the road. This is especially important for those who have darker colored cars!

6. Don't promote road rage. This is one of the most dangerous forms of driving- road rage! This will also get you into a dangerous accident, fast. If someone cuts you off, don't get revenge. Breath, play classical music or do whatever else you need to do, but don't tail gate them, hold your horn down or flick them off!

These are some of the tips I use for driving defensively. I have been driving for over 11 years and during these years I've driven motorcycles (one of which I own), SUVs, a 300 hp Porsche, moving vans and various other cars. Using these techniques, I haven't had one accident or one moving violation ticket!
