How to learn Greek

Learning a new language can be difficult. This is especially true of Greek. Ever heard the famous phrase, "It's all Greek to me"? It's used to signify that something is completely impossible to understand for a person.

If you're considering learning Greek, I would like to suggest a few starting points for learning it from scratch. Keep in mind that these suggestions can also work for other languages as well!

1. Learn the alphabet
This is one of the most elementary steps to learning Greek. Keep in mind that Greek letters have actual names, so memorize the names of the letters first. Also practice writing them on note cards or paper.

2. Learn what sounds each letter represents.
For example, memorize the fact that an "omega" (looks like an English W) sounds like a long o. Learn the other letters of the alphabet and their sounds. These are the building blocks of the language.

3. Begin memorizing vocabulary.
Whether or not you start with nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc. makes little difference. What's important is that you begin memorizing different words.

4. Take note of special sentence structures/rules.
In Greek, the articles to words sometimes appear right in front of them (as in English), but most of the time they're in different places in the sentence so as to demonstrate the order of words. Even if you don't know each vocabulary word, start looking at Greek sentences and how they are formed.

5. Practice reading and writing sentences.
Writing assists those of us who are visual learners. Reading it will help with pronunciation and visual verification of words.

6. Practice speaking the language!
Now that you've got the alphabet, vocabulary and sentence structures in mind, try saying sentences. It's most useful if you can find a friend or relative who speaks Greek. Try having a conversation with them!

7. Be persistent!
This is one of the most important steps to learning Greek. if you are persistent in your studies and memorization work that you set up for yourself, you should be able to learn it in no time!
