Northern Virginia vs NYC
Since I have lived in Northern Virgina most of my life, I have come to realize that it is quite similar to New York City. Allow me to explain... What are some common perceptions of NYC? Well, most people who haven't seen NYC in person come up with their thoughts about the city based on famous movies and so they think that NYC is fast paced, full of taxis and the speed of life is FAST. Well, that's actually not too far from the truth, and I base that judgment on being there myself and having many friends who grew up, lived and/or still live in New York City. I don't think that I'm being too harsh in my judgment of NYC. And it's not that I hate NYC- that's not the case at all. I'm just saying that the speed of life is very fast paced there. To get ahead you have to do whatever it takes and be quick. Try driving in downtown NYC during rush hour! I did, and let me tell you, I didn't have time to wave people in front of me- they would simply cut me off! Well, here's where the similarity is with Northern VA, also known as the Washington D.C. Metro area. People here are very fast paced and are really looking out for #1- themselves. Are there a ton of good, selfless people here in Northern Virginia and NYC? Of course! But for the most part, people here want to get ahead very quickly and they'll do anything to do just that. Same can be said of NYC. If you don't agree with me, try visiting California. I was born there, have relatives there and have spent extensive time there. You have to believe me when I say their speed of life is MUCH more laid back. Maybe it's the beaches, maybe it's the different people, maybe it's that they get lots of sun. There are probably thousands of theories out there, but whatever the case may be, they are just much more laid back than NYC and D.C. I won't begin to speculate why D.C. and NYC (and other places) are so fast paced. Nor will I speculate as to why some places in other parts of the United States are more laid back. Do I wish we were more laid back here in Northern Virginia? Yes! In fact, that's what I've been trying to work on in my own life for years. I have come to realize that I have bought into this speed-is-life mentality and that the faster you're going, the quicker you'll get to good places. As this may be true (and some argue it isn't!), I wouldn't want to pave over others to get ahead in life. I have to constantly ask myself what affect my decisions are having on others around me. Not only that, what about the people closest to me? My wife, my kids, my family, friends, etc. What impact will my selfish ambitions have on them? I suppose I will never know. |
